Amber Rowland, Principal

Amber, a San Francisco native, founded The Rowland Agency in 2009, helping brand and launch some of the hottest B2B companies. Named one of the best PR people in the tech industry three years in a row,* she is passionate about promoting the most promising technologies and brings 20 years of experience successfully developing and leading communications and marketing programs to her clients.

Before founding The Rowland Agency, Amber served as a communications leader at VMware where she helped grow annual revenues from less than $30 million to $2 billion in seven and a half years. Having started as employee #180, she led global communications during the company’s hyper growth phase. She then ran CEO communications for Diane Greene, who is now the head of Google's cloud business, and Paul Maritz, who was the third-ranking executive at Microsoft. She also supported the company’s CTO Steve Herrod, who is now managing director at General Catalyst.

As the only in-house communications counsel during her first five years at VMware, she worked closely with the leadership team to establish a distinct, powerful company brand and to create the virtualization category through sustained strategic influencer, media and analyst programs. She handled communications for VMware’s IPO — the largest tech IPO of 2007. She also led the media and analyst programs at VMworld, developed and ran thought leadership programs for cloud computing, green IT and other strategic initiatives, and served as co-chair of The Green Grid Communications Committee.

Prior to VMware, Amber held leadership positions at Applied Communications (now Bite) on the Oracle and SeeBeyond (acquired by Sun) accounts, BroadVision, Storm Technology and Unison Software (now IBM Tivoli) where she built her solid track record of delivering results including high profile placements in key business and technology media outlets.

Amber earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from Santa Clara University, served on the Ulumau Hawaiʻi Island Leadership Series Executive Board and currently volunteers for Hui Kuapa, a Friends of the Future program.
